Another Food Blog!

I have no business writing a food blog. First of all, I have no writing experience to speak of. Second, I have very little experience cooking. But I like to eat, talk about food and occasionally dabble with family recipes. I grew up making simple recipes like banana bread, chocolate chip cookies and apple pie. My mother is a great cook and has always been willing to share the family recipes that she grew up making. I am truly inspired by my family and the numerous recipes that they have passed down through the years.
This weekend I had the pleasure of making slippery pickles with my mother and grandmother. Never heard of slippery pickles? Well, they are a tradition in my family for Thanksgiving. They are made from large, overripe cucumbers cooked down in a vinegar, sugar and cinnamon syrup. Yum!! And let me tell you, they are slippery! My great grandmother, Gladys has been making slippery pickles as long as I can remember. Recently she has been moved to a nursing home. She is 97 years old, and up until about four years ago, she had been making slippery pickles.
For years I have been collecting recipes from my relatives and family friends. Many of my favorite memories involve food. I hope to share a few of those memories here and maybe a few recipes too. I'd love to hear about your family recipes too!

Slippery Pickles

10 cups peeled/de-seeded overripe cucumbers
1/4 cup pickling salt
enough water to cover

4 cups apple cider vinegar
4 cups water
2 cups sugar
4 cups brown sugar
5 Tbsp cinnamon

Peel overripe cucumbers, de-seed and slice into large strips. Soak in salt and water for about 12 hours. Rinse cucumbers and add to vinegar, sugar and cinnamon mixture. Bring to a boil and let simmer until the cucumbers are translucent and taking on a brown color.
Cool and eat! or can and give away as gifts!

Enjoy!
